We live in Cross Creek, on the Hillsborough County side of New Tampa (Tampa, FL 33647). Most of the homes we visit are a few miles up Bruce B. Downs in Wesley Chapel, on the Pasco County side. So we keep two school calendars on the wall, and they do not match.
Cross County Line Road heading north and you change school districts, fire departments and the tax bill. For families, the school district is the part that shows up every week. Wesley Chapel kids attend Pasco County Schools. New Tampa kids attend Hillsborough County Public Schools. Two elected school boards, two calendars, two sets of early-release days and teacher workdays, and a handful of days each year when one set of kids is home and the other is in class.
Here is what that looks like for the 2026-27 school year, taken from the calendars each district has approved and published, and what it means if you need after-school coverage, homework help, or a sitter on the odd day off.
Two first days, 3 days apart
Hillsborough students start on Monday, August 10, 2026. Pasco students start on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Pasco's elementary meet-the-teacher falls on August 10, the same day New Tampa kids are already in class. Both districts finish on Friday, May 28, 2027.
Those 3 days matter if you have one kid in a Wesley Chapel school and a cousin, a carpool partner or a neighbor kid across the line. They matter for summer coverage too. A New Tampa family's summer ends half a week earlier than a Wesley Chapel family's, and the last week of summer is the hardest one to fill.
The weekly rhythm is different
This is the difference that shapes the whole year.
- Hillsborough releases students an hour early every Monday. Every Monday of the school year, New Tampa kids come home early.
- Pasco keeps full days and instead schedules three stand-alone early-release days in 2026-27: Wednesday, October 28, Wednesday, January 27, and Wednesday, February 24.
If you work from home in Tampa Palms or Hunter's Green, Monday afternoons are already a fixture of your week. If you are in Seven Oaks or Meadow Pointe, the early days come 3 times a year and are easy to forget until the bus shows up at lunchtime.
The days when only one district is off
Most of the big breaks line up this year. Both districts are off for Labor Day (September 7), the Monday after the first grading period (October 12), Thanksgiving week (November 23 through 27), winter break (December 21 through January 1, plus a teacher day on January 4, with students back on Tuesday, January 5), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 18), Presidents' Day (February 15), spring break (March 22 through 26, plus a teacher day on Monday, March 29), and the last day of school.
The gaps are in the one-off days:
- Wednesday, November 11, Veterans Day. Hillsborough students are off. Pasco students are in school.
- Friday, February 12. Hillsborough is off for the Florida State Fair. Pasco lists it as a student day that converts to a day off if the district has not needed it for make-up time after the first semester, so Wesley Chapel families will not know for certain until winter.
- Monday, March 8. Hillsborough is off for the Strawberry Festival. Pasco is in school. Hillsborough originally had this day on March 1 and moved it in a March 2026 update, which is a good reminder that calendars change after they are approved.
- Friday, April 16. Hillsborough is off. Pasco again lists a student day that may convert to a day off.
So in 2026-27 there are at least 2 days, and possibly 4, when a New Tampa kid is home and a Wesley Chapel kid is not. It goes the other way only in August, when Pasco's summer runs 3 days longer, unless Pasco's convert days flip.
Teacher workdays and hurricane make-up days
Both districts put a teacher day on Monday, October 12, Monday, January 4, and Monday, March 29. Pasco calls them Teacher Planning Days, and Hillsborough calls them Non-Student Days. The effect is the same: a 3-day weekend for kids and a regular workday for parents.
Hurricane season is where the two calendars can come apart later. Hillsborough has named its tentative make-up days for 2026-27: October 12, November 11, November 23 through 25, and January 4. Pasco reserves June 1 through 4, 2027, as extended-closure make-up days and has the two starred days in February and April. If a storm closes schools for a few days this fall, one district could reclaim a day off that the other keeps. Check both calendars again in January.
What this means for after-school coverage
We schedule around whichever calendar your child is on, and it is worth telling us which district you are in when you first reach out, because it is not always obvious from the address.
- Homework help is $38 an hour, or $145 for a block of 4 one-hour sessions. For Hillsborough families, Monday early release is a natural standing slot: the bus is home an hour early, the afternoon is long, and the homework gets done before dinner instead of after. For Pasco families, a standing Tuesday or Thursday slot tends to work better, since the early-release days are rare and scattered.
- Babysitting is $24 an hour with a 2-hour minimum, plus $3 an hour for each additional child in the same family. The days that need it most are the one-off days above, when the office is open and school is not. A Veterans Day or a Strawberry Festival Monday for a New Tampa family is a full day to cover, not an afternoon.
- The odd half-day , like Pasco's Wednesday early releases, fits either service. A 2-hour homework-and-snack block covers the gap between the early bus and the end of the workday.
The convert days
Pasco's February 12 and April 16 deserve their own note. They sit on the calendar as school days with an asterisk. If the district has not lost instructional time to storms by the end of the first semester, they become days off. If it has, they stay school days. Either way, the decision comes after winter break. If you are a Wesley Chapel family, pencil both in as possible days off and confirm in January. If you are a New Tampa family, both are already days off, no asterisk.
How to read the two calendars side by side
- Print both. Pasco publishes a one-page grid and Hillsborough publishes a one-page table. Hang them next to each other.
- Circle the one-off days first. The big breaks match this year; the single days are where the surprises live.
- Mark Mondays if you are in Hillsborough. An hour early, every week, adds up to a lot of afternoons.
- Note both districts' make-up-day rules, and look again after any storm closure.
- Tell your sitter, your tutor, your carpool and the grandparents which district you are in, because the two calendars do not match.
